Being There - Original Contemporary Figurative Painting | Oil Painting by Harriet Muller
The Story Behind the Painting
Being There is a quiet meditation on stillness.
Inspired by mornings in my former apartment overlooking Bournemouth beach, this painting captures that fleeting moment between waking and beginning the day. Before the world asks anything of us, there is a brief pause—a chance simply to exist, breathe and appreciate the beauty of the morning light.
I have always been fascinated by those small, often overlooked moments that shape our lives. In this painting, the figure turns away from the viewer, inviting us to imagine ourselves in her place. Rather than telling a story, the composition encourages reflection, allowing each viewer to bring their own memories and emotions to the work.
Warm natural skin tones contrast with the rich crimson drapery, while the soft morning light creates a peaceful atmosphere that fills the room. The restrained palette and clean geometry of the window frame draw the eye towards the horizon beyond, evoking openness, possibility and calm.
Like much of my work, Being There celebrates the beauty found in everyday life. It is an invitation to slow down, embrace stillness and remember that sometimes the most meaningful moments are the quietest ones.
