The Story Behind the Painting
Golden Hour was inspired by one of the greatest joys of our home: sharing our garden with a family of wild foxes.
For years I dreamed of having a garden reminiscent of The Secret Garden—a place filled with wildlife, birdsong and moments of quiet wonder. Today that dream has become reality. As we sit down for dinner, we often catch sight of a mother fox emerging from her den with her playful cubs, exploring the garden in the warm crepuscular light.
Painted en plein air, Golden Hour, boasts richly textured emerald greens created using a palette knife, allowing the movement of the paint to echo the untamed beauty of the garden itself. Beneath the verdant foliage, a shimmering bronze and gold acrylic ground catches the light, subtly glowing through the layers of oil paint and giving the work a warmth that changes throughout the day.
Rather than portraying wildlife as distant subjects, I wanted to capture a fleeting, deeply personal moment—a quiet celebration of trust, motherhood and the beauty that exists just beyond our back door.
As with much of my work, the painting invites the viewer to pause, reconnect with nature and appreciate the extraordinary moments hidden within everyday life.
